A dry suit that worked perfectly last fall can fail on the first cold-water launch of spring because salt, sand, sunscreen, sweat, or a neglected zipper has had months to do its damage. This waterproof suit maintenance guide focuses on the parts that keep paddlers, sailors, rescue teams, and work crews dry: the shell, waterproof zipper, latex or neoprene seals, socks, and seams.

Your suit is protective equipment, not just outerwear. Regular care helps it breathe better, prevents small issues from becoming expensive repairs, and gives you a better chance of finding a problem before you are far from shore.

Start With the Manufacturer's Care Instructions

Materials and construction vary. A front-entry kayak dry suit with latex neck and wrist gaskets needs different attention than an immersion or work suit with neoprene seals. Always use the care label and the manufacturer's instructions as the final word, especially for washing temperature, approved cleaners, zipper lubricants, and repair limits.

One rule applies to nearly every waterproof-breathable suit: avoid ordinary laundry detergent, fabric softener, bleach, stain removers, and dry cleaning. These products can leave residue that interferes with breathability, damage coatings, or shorten the life of gasket materials.

Rinse Your Suit After Every Use

A full wash is not necessary after every paddle, but a freshwater rinse usually is. Turn the suit inside out when practical and rinse away sweat and body oils. Rinse the outside as well, paying close attention to the zipper, cuffs, booties, knees, seat, and shoulders where grit collects.

Saltwater users should be especially consistent. Salt crystals can work into zipper teeth and fabric folds, while dried salt pulls moisture from latex seals. If you have been around muddy rivers, silty launches, or sandy beaches, rinse before debris dries into the suit.

For a quick post-trip routine, close the zipper, rinse the exterior with cool fresh water, then open the suit and rinse the inside. Hang it to dry in a shaded, ventilated area. Do not leave it in a hot vehicle, on blacktop, or in direct sun for the afternoon. Heat and ultraviolet exposure are hard on waterproof coatings, adhesives, and latex.

Wash When the Suit Needs It

Wash your suit when it looks dirty, starts to smell, feels clammy inside, or no longer sheds water as it once did. For frequent users, that may mean every few weeks during the season. For occasional users, a few careful washes per year may be enough.

Close all zippers and fasteners. Wash according to the garment label, generally with a technical cleaner made for waterproof-breathable apparel. Use the recommended water temperature and a gentle cycle if machine washing is approved. An extra rinse is useful because leftover cleaner can reduce fabric performance.

Hand washing is an option when the label permits it, but do not scrub aggressively with a stiff brush. Concentrate on high-contact areas such as the neck, cuffs, inner waist, seat, and feet. Sunscreen, insect repellent, fuel, fish slime, and greasy dock residue should be removed promptly. If a contaminant will not come off with approved cleaning, stop before using a harsh solvent that could cause more damage than the stain.

Restore Water Repellency When Needed

The waterproof membrane is not the same thing as the durable water repellent finish on the outer fabric. When the face fabric wets out, the suit may still be waterproof, but it can feel colder, breathe poorly, and take longer to dry. Water should bead and roll away from the shell rather than soak into it.

After cleaning, restore the water-repellent finish only if the care instructions call for it. Some suits respond to a wash-in or spray-on treatment followed by low heat in a dryer, while others have different requirements. Use a treatment compatible with technical waterproof fabrics. More product is not better. Apply it evenly and follow the directions exactly.

Protect the Waterproof Zipper

A waterproof zipper is one of the most critical parts of a dry suit. It is also one of the easiest parts to damage through rushed handling. Open and close it with the suit laid flat or hanging without tension. Keep fabric clear of the slider, and never force a zipper that feels gritty or stuck.

Rinse the zipper after each trip, especially after saltwater use. Once dry, inspect the teeth and sealing surfaces for sand, hair, mud, or residue. Use only the lubricant recommended for your zipper type and suit manufacturer. Random oils, waxes, and household lubricants can attract grit or interfere with the sealing surface.

Store the zipper fully open or in the position specified by the manufacturer. Avoid sharp folds across it. If the slider separates, teeth are bent, the zipper leaks, or the pull becomes difficult to operate after cleaning, arrange professional service. A zipper failure is not a field repair to improvise before a cold-water outing.

Inspect Latex and Neoprene Seals

Latex neck and wrist gaskets create the close seal that keeps water out during immersion. They also age faster than the fabric body, particularly when exposed to sun, ozone, sweat, insect repellent, and petroleum products. Before every trip, stretch each gasket gently and look for tiny cracks, dry areas, thinning edges, or tackiness.

Rinse seals after use and let them dry away from heat and sunlight. If the suit will be stored for an extended period, a light application of unscented talc can help keep latex from sticking to itself. Do not use petroleum-based products. They can weaken latex quickly.

Neoprene seals are more tolerant of handling but still need inspection. Check for torn stitching, delamination, compressed areas, and loss of hook-and-loop adjustment. A seal that feels loose may be more than a comfort issue. It can change how the suit performs in a swim or rescue situation.

Check Socks, Seams, and High-Wear Areas

Built-in fabric socks deserve attention because they spend much of the day inside footwear. Turn them inside out after use when possible so both sides can dry. Inspect the toe and heel areas for abrasion, pinholes, and seam separation. Wear proper footwear over fabric socks. Walking on rough ground in socks alone is a fast way to create a leak.

Then examine seam tape inside the suit, particularly around the seat, knees, crotch, shoulders, and zipper ends. Lifting tape, bubbling adhesive, worn fabric, and punctures should be addressed early. Small patches may be appropriate for minor shell damage if approved for your suit material, but seam tape failure, major abrasion, and leaks near the zipper call for a qualified repair service.

If you are unsure whether a suit is leaking, perform a controlled inspection before a trip. A damp base layer after use can come from condensation or perspiration, not necessarily a hole. Look for a repeatable wet spot in the same location, then check the shell, seam tape, socks, and seals around that area. Do not assume every bit of interior moisture means the suit has failed.

Store It Dry, Clean, and Out of the Sun

Long-term storage has a direct effect on suit life. Make sure the suit is completely dry inside and out before putting it away. Trapped moisture can lead to odor, mildew, and degradation of adhesives. Hang it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heaters, electric motors, and chemicals such as gasoline or solvents.

Avoid cramming a dry suit into a sealed tote, leaving it compressed under heavy gear, or folding it sharply along the zipper and gaskets. Short-term transport in a gear bag is fine, but it should not become permanent storage. If closet space is limited, use broad, gentle folds and inspect the suit more often for creases or sticking latex.

Build Maintenance Into Your Launch Routine

The best care plan is one you will actually follow. Rinse after use, dry completely, inspect seals and zipper before each outing, and wash when dirt or reduced water beading tells you it is time. Schedule a deeper inspection before the cold-water season and again before a major trip, training day, or work assignment.

A dry suit is there for the moments when the water is least forgiving. Give it ten careful minutes before you launch, and it is far more likely to give you the protection you bought it for.
