A drysuit is only as dry as its seals. A small crack at the neck gasket or a wrist seal that has gone soft and sticky can turn a cold-water paddle into a fast exit. Know When a Gasket Needs Replacement

Latex gaskets do not fail all at once. Before they split, they often show warning signs: surface cracking, a chalky finish, tackiness, discoloration, thinning at the edge, or a seal that tears easily when gently stretched. UV exposure, body oils, sunscreen, insect repellent, heat, and long-term storage all shorten latex life.

Do not wait for a seal to break at the put-in. If your gasket has visible cracks, feels weak, or has already begun tearing, replace it before the next trip. A drysuit is protective equipment, not just rain gear. In cold water, a leaking neck or wrist seal can reduce comfort, mobility, and the margin of safety you planned around.

Neoprene seals and factory-installed ring systems are different. A neoprene neck may need repair rather than a standard latex replacement, while removable cuff systems use purpose-built rings and seals. Check your suit's construction before ordering parts or applying adhesive. If the suit has an unusual fabric, a damaged seam near the gasket, or a molded system you do not recognize, professional service is the safer choice.

What You Need Before Starting

Replacing a glued latex gasket is a careful shop job, but it is manageable with the right setup. Work in a clean, dry, well-ventilated space with enough time for adhesive to cure fully. Rushing the cure is one of the most common reasons a new gasket lifts at the edge.

Gather these essentials:

  • A replacement latex neck or wrist gasket sized for your suit and intended use
  • A smooth form or mandrel that supports the suit opening without stretching it excessively
  • Adhesive approved for drysuit gasket work, plus the cleaner or primer specified by that adhesive system
  • Fine sandpaper or abrasive pad, masking tape, clean lint-free cloths, gloves, and sharp scissors
For a neck gasket, many paddlers use a smooth plastic bucket, large container, or purpose-made cone as a form. For wrist seals, a bottle or narrow cylindrical form can work. The key is a firm, smooth surface that holds the opening flat. Avoid rough cardboard or unfinished wood, which can snag fabric or transfer debris into the adhesive.

Read the adhesive directions before cutting off the old gasket. Some contact cements require coats on both surfaces and a specific open time. Others call for a primer, heat activation, or a longer cure. Use the product instructions as the authority for mix ratio, ventilation, application, and cure time.

Drysuit Gasket Replacement Guide: The Installation Process

1. Remove the damaged gasket

Turn the suit opening inside out so the old gasket bond is accessible. Most glued latex gaskets are attached to the inside of the suit's fabric tunnel. Carefully cut the old gasket away, leaving a narrow strip of old latex at the bonded area if possible. This helps protect the drysuit fabric from accidental cuts.

Do not pull aggressively on the old gasket. A hard pull can damage seam tape, distort the tunnel, or tear coated fabric. Use small, controlled cuts and keep the blade pointed away from the suit body.

Once the bulk of the gasket is removed, carefully peel or sand away loose material. You want a clean, stable bonding surface. If the existing adhesive is firmly attached and smooth, it may be acceptable to bond over it, depending on the adhesive manufacturer's directions. If it is brittle, lifting, or contaminated, remove as much as practical without harming the fabric.

2. Prepare the bonding surface

Place the suit opening over the form and secure it with masking tape if needed. The fabric should lie smooth, with no folds through the area where the gasket will bond. Mark the intended overlap width. A consistent overlap is more dependable than a narrow, uneven glue line.

Lightly abrade the latex bonding area of the new gasket and the corresponding surface on the suit if your adhesive system calls for it. You are creating a surface the adhesive can grip, not grinding through the material. Wipe away all dust with the recommended cleaner and allow the surfaces to dry completely.

Keep oils off the prepared areas. Handle the gasket by its outer edge, and wear clean gloves if you tend to touch the work surface often. Skin oils can weaken a bond that otherwise looks fine on installation day.

3. Apply adhesive with control

Apply thin, even coats rather than one thick coat. Thick adhesive can stay soft underneath, create ridges, and make it harder to place the gasket evenly. Follow the product directions for the number of coats and the time between them.

When both surfaces reach the required tack or activation stage, begin attaching the gasket at one point and work steadily around the opening. Keep the gasket aligned with your marks. Do not stretch latex to make it fit. Stretching can create a seal that looks smooth on the form but pulls against the bond every time the suit is worn.

Press the full overlap firmly into place. Work around the circumference with your fingers or a smooth roller, checking for bubbles, dry spots, and wrinkles. The edge should lie flat all the way around. If contact cement grabs in the wrong position, do not force the material into place and hope for the best. Stop, assess the adhesive instructions, and correct the alignment before curing.

4. Let the repair cure completely

Leave the suit on its form for the full cure period. Keep it away from direct sun, heaters, dust, and pets. Adhesive that feels dry to the touch is not necessarily ready for stretching, trimming, or immersion.

Cure time depends on the adhesive and shop conditions. Cool temperatures and high humidity can extend it. Plan the repair several days before a trip whenever possible. A gasket replacement finished the night before a winter paddle is not a good place to gamble.

Trim the Gasket for a Secure, Comfortable Seal

Most latex neck and wrist gaskets are intentionally supplied long. Trim only after the bond has fully cured. Neck seals commonly have concentric trim rings, while wrist seals may have guide lines or a tapered shape. Use sharp scissors and cut one ring at a time.

A neck gasket should seal against bare skin without causing headache, pressure, trouble swallowing, or restricted breathing. Wrist seals should sit above the wrist bones and keep water out without making your hands tingle or feel cold from reduced circulation. If a new gasket feels too tight, trim one small increment, test it, and reassess. You cannot add latex back after an over-trim.

People with latex sensitivity should not use latex seals against the skin. Choose a suitable alternative seal system or consult a drysuit service professional before using the suit.

Test Before You Trust It

Inspect the new bond in bright light after curing. Look for lifted edges, gaps, uneven overlap, or adhesive that remains soft. Stretch the gasket gently while watching the bond line. It should stay flat and secure.

Then perform a controlled leak test. Close the drysuit completely, protect the neck and wrist openings as appropriate for your suit design, and use low-pressure air only. A few gentle breaths of air or a low-pressure testing method can reveal leaks when you apply soapy water around the repaired area. Never overinflate a drysuit. Excess pressure can damage seams, zippers, and fabric.

A dry land test is not a replacement for sound judgment on the water. For the first outing after a repair, stay close to shore, wear your normal thermal layers and flotation device, and avoid conditions where a small leak would create a serious problem.

Make the Next Gasket Last Longer

Rinse the suit after saltwater use, dry it fully inside and out, and store it out of sunlight and away from ozone-producing equipment such as motors and electrical devices. Keep petroleum products, bug spray, sunscreen, and solvents away from latex whenever possible.

Before each launch, give the neck and wrist seals a quick stretch and visual inspection.
