If a capsize, failed launch, or rescue could leave you immersed long enough to lose dexterity, a drysuit plus suitable insulation is a sensible part of the system.
That said, a drysuit is not automatically necessary for every outing. In warm water and stable conditions, lighter splash gear may be more comfortable and more appropriate. The right choice depends on water temperature, forecast, trip distance, rescue options, personal skill, and how likely you are to end up in the water.
Trade-Offs to Consider Before Buying

Finally, do not confuse a drysuit with insulation. The suit keeps water out; your base and insulating layers manage warmth. Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Also consider how often you will wear it. A paddler using a drysuit a few weekends each shoulder season may prioritize straightforward protection and value. Someone instructing, guiding, running whitewater, or paddling through winter will likely benefit from higher-end fabric, better abrasion protection, and features that reduce fatigue over long days.
