Drysuit Maintenance That Keeps You Ready

A drysuit that worked on the last trip can still fail on the next one if its zipper is dirty, its seals are cracked, or damp gear was packed away after use. Drysuit maintenance is not cosmetic upkeep. It is part of cold-water preparedness for kayakers, sailors, rescue teams, and anyone who depends on staying dry, warm, and mobile.

The good news is that regular care is straightforward. A few minutes after each use, plus a closer inspection before your season begins, can extend the working life of a technical suit and help catch small problems before they become water inside your layers.

Rinse Your Drysuit After Every Use

Salt water, muddy river water, sand, sunscreen, fuel residue, and sweat all shorten the life of drysuit materials when they are left in place. After paddling, sailing, training, or working near the water, rinse the outside of the suit with fresh water. Pay close attention to the zipper, wrist and neck seals, booties or socks, and any relief zipper.

You do not need to aggressively scrub the suit after every outing. A gentle rinse is usually enough for routine use. If the suit is visibly dirty or has been exposed to salt water, wash it according to the manufacturer’s care instructions using a technical garment cleaner. Standard laundry detergent, bleach, fabric softener, and stain removers can leave residues or damage components that need to remain flexible and waterproof.

For a suit used frequently in warm conditions, the inside deserves attention too. Body oils and perspiration collect in the lining and around seals. Turning the suit inside out for washing or rinsing, when permitted by its care label, helps keep it cleaner and more comfortable over time.

Dry It Completely Before Storage

Putting a damp drysuit in a gear bag is one of the fastest ways to create odor, mildew, and premature material wear. Hang the suit in a shaded, ventilated place and let the exterior dry. Then turn it inside out so moisture around the lining, socks, zipper flap, and seals can dry as well.

Keep the suit out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, furnace vents, and hot vehicle interiors. High heat and ultraviolet exposure are especially hard on latex neck and wrist seals. A garage may work for temporary drying, but it is not always a good long-term storage location if it has large temperature swings, direct sun, or rodents.

Never store a drysuit tightly compressed for weeks or months. Fold it loosely or hang it in a cool, dry area. Avoid sharp creases through waterproof socks, knees, zipper tracks, and seals. If you hang the suit, use a broad, supportive hanger rather than a narrow wire hanger that can distort the shoulders.

Give the Zipper the Attention It Deserves

A waterproof zipper is a critical performance component, not an ordinary clothing zipper. Dirt in the teeth can make it hard to close and may prevent a reliable seal. Rinse the zipper after use, especially after salt water exposure, and use a soft brush to remove grit if necessary.

Open and close the zipper carefully. Do not force it through resistance. First check for trapped fabric, sand, or debris, then gently work the slider back rather than pulling harder. Forcing a stuck zipper can damage the slider or zipper teeth and turn a simple cleaning job into a costly repair.

Use only the zipper lubricant or wax recommended for your suit’s zipper type. Metal waterproof zippers often need occasional lubrication; plastic systems may have different care requirements. Too much product can attract dirt, so apply it sparingly and wipe away excess. Keep the zipper fully closed when the drysuit is stored unless the manufacturer specifically directs otherwise.

Inspect Latex and Neoprene Seals

Neck and wrist seals are often the first parts of a drysuit to show age. Before each trip, stretch the seals gently and look for small cracks, thinning areas, sticky spots, or tears near the edge. A seal can look acceptable at rest but split when stretched over your hand or head.

Latex is particularly vulnerable to heat, sunlight, petroleum products, insect repellent, and ozone exposure. Keep gasoline, solvents, aerosol sprays, and strong chemical cleaners away from it. If you use sunscreen or bug spray before launching, wash your hands before pulling on latex wrist seals.

Some paddlers use unscented talc or a manufacturer-approved seal treatment to reduce sticking during storage. This can help, but it is not a substitute for inspection. Do not apply oils or random household products to seals. They may feel slick at first while quietly accelerating deterioration.

Neoprene seals are more durable against some forms of handling but still require inspection for worn stitching, delamination, and loss of elasticity. Whether your suit uses latex, neoprene, or a combination of both, a damaged seal should be repaired or replaced before a cold-water outing.

Maintain the Waterproof Fabric and DWR Finish

A drysuit’s waterproof-breathable fabric can remain waterproof even when its outer face fabric begins to wet out. Wetting out means water spreads across the exterior instead of beading up. The suit may feel clammy, breathe poorly, and take longer to dry, even if water is not entering through the membrane.

When water no longer beads on a clean suit, it may be time to restore the durable water repellent finish with a treatment designed for technical outerwear. Clean the suit first. Applying a treatment over salt, mud, or body oils will not solve the problem. Follow the product and drysuit manufacturer instructions carefully, particularly where heat activation is involved.

Do not assume every damp feeling is a failed fabric. Condensation, sweat, wet base layers, a leaking gasket, and a partially closed zipper can all mimic a fabric leak. Find the source before treating or repairing the suit.

Check High-Wear Areas Before They Fail

Knees, seat panels, elbows, shoulder straps, socks, and areas around the zipper get the most abrasion. Look for scuffs, pinholes, peeling seam tape, loose stitching, and worn patches. Inspect the inside as well as the outside, because seam tape may begin lifting internally before you see a leak on the exterior.

A small pinhole can be repaired with the appropriate flexible waterproof repair material, but only after the area is fully clean and dry. Larger tears, failed seam tape, zipper issues, and damage close to a major seam are better handled by a qualified drysuit repair service. A field repair may get you through an emergency, but it should not automatically become a permanent fix for protective gear.

For users who rely on a suit for rescue, commercial work, or frequent winter paddling, schedule a professional inspection or pressure test when you suspect leakage or before a high-demand season. The cost of service is easier to plan for than the consequences of discovering a leak when water temperatures are low.

Store It Ready for the Next Launch

At the end of the season, wash and dry the drysuit thoroughly, inspect it, service the zipper as required, and address repairs before storage. Waiting until the first cold weekend of the next season often means discovering a cracked wrist seal or stuck zipper when replacements and repair time matter most.

Keep the suit away from direct sunlight, heat sources, chemicals, and sharp objects. Store it where it will not be crushed under boats, bins, or other equipment. If you use a drysuit liner, wash and dry that separately so you are not putting clean technical gear over a damp or odor-filled layer.

A drysuit is protective equipment built for conditions where being wet is more than an inconvenience. Treat it like the safety gear it is: rinse it, dry it, inspect it, and repair concerns early. When the water is cold and the weather turns, that routine is what keeps your gear ready to perform.
