A calm launch can fool you. Air temp feels decent, the sun is out, and the first few minutes on the water seem comfortable. What a drysuit does not do is generate warmth on its own. If you under-layer poorly, you can still get cold. Fit also matters. Too tight and movement suffers. If the water is under 60 degrees, start by assuming a drysuit is worth serious consideration. If it is under 50, the case gets much stronger. Add distance from shore, current, wind, limited rescue support, or cold-weather paddling, and the answer usually shifts from maybe to yes.
If the water is warm, your route is short, rescue is easy, and immersion is expected and manageable, a wetsuit or lighter system may be enough. But if you are hesitating because a drysuit seems like more gear than you want, that is the wrong comparison. The right comparison is whether your current setup protects you during the worst five minutes of the outing, not the easiest fifty.
