How to Wash Drysuit Without Damaging It

Salt crystals in a relief zipper, river grit in the neck seal, and sunscreen on the shell can all shorten the service life of a technical suit. Knowing how to wash drysuit gear correctly is basic maintenance, not cosmetic cleanup. A clean suit breathes better, seals more comfortably, and is easier to inspect before the next cold-water paddle, rescue shift, or workday.
Most drysuits do not need a full wash after every outing. They do need a fresh-water rinse after saltwater use, muddy launches, or any trip that leaves visible dirt, sweat, fuel residue, fish slime, or sand on the suit. The goal is simple: remove contaminants without harming the waterproof-breathable membrane, durable water repellent finish, latex seals, socks, or zipper.
How to Wash Drysuit Gear Step by Step
Start by checking the care label and following it if it differs from general guidance. Suit materials, seam tape, zipper types, and gasket construction vary by model. A high-end paddling drysuit and a heavy-duty immersion or work suit may have different cleaning instructions.
Before washing, empty every pocket and close all zippers. This includes the main entry zipper, relief zipper, pocket zippers, and any cuff or ankle zippers. Closing them keeps the zipper teeth aligned and reduces the chance of snags during cleaning. Fasten hook-and-loop tabs as well, so they do not catch seals or fabric.
Turn the suit inside out if the manufacturer permits it, especially when the interior has absorbed sweat, body oils, or grime from layers. For a suit that is only dirty on the outside, washing it right-side out is usually fine. Do not force latex neck or wrist gaskets through tight openings. Latex can tear when stretched against a zipper edge or rough seam.
Fill a clean tub with cool or lukewarm water. Avoid hot water. Heat can stress seam adhesive, affect waterproof coatings, and reduce the life of latex and neoprene components. Add a small amount of technical outerwear cleaner or a mild cleaner specifically approved for waterproof-breathable garments.
Use your hands to move the water through the suit. Focus on high-contact areas such as the neck, wrists, seat, knees, booties, and inside of the torso. A soft cloth or soft sponge can help lift stubborn dirt. Do not use a stiff brush, abrasive pad, or aggressive scrubbing on the shell.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water until no cleaner remains. Residue can interfere with breathability and may leave the fabric feeling sticky. If the water is still sudsy after the first rinse, rinse again. This matters most around seals, zipper areas, and the inside of the suit.
What Not to Use on a Drysuit
The wrong cleaner can do more damage than a season of normal use. Regular laundry detergent often leaves behind fragrances, softeners, brighteners, and surfactants that reduce water repellency. Fabric softener is worse because it coats fibers and compromises moisture transfer. Bleach, stain removers, solvent-based cleaners, and household degreasers can damage membranes, seam tape, coatings, and gaskets.
Avoid dry cleaning. Also skip the washing machine unless the suit maker specifically says machine washing is acceptable. Even then, use a gentle cycle, cold water, and no agitator. Front-loading machines are generally less risky than top-loading machines with a center agitator, but hand washing remains the safest choice for many drysuits.
A pressure washer is never appropriate. It can drive water and dirt into seams, seals, zipper areas, and fabric layers. The same goes for hard brushing dried mud from the shell. Soak the mud first, then wipe it away gently.
Cleaning Latex Seals, Neoprene, and Zippers
Latex neck and wrist seals deserve extra care because they are flexible but vulnerable to oils, ozone, heat, and sharp edges. Rinse them with fresh water and wipe them with a clean, damp cloth. If sunscreen, insect repellent, fuel, or body oil is present, use a small amount of approved mild cleaner, then rinse completely.
Do not use petroleum-based products on latex. That includes many lubricants, protectants, and automotive cleaners. Keep insect repellent away from your suit whenever possible, especially products containing DEET, which can harm technical fabrics and seals.
Neoprene socks and cuffs can hold odor after repeated wear. Wash them gently with the same mild technical cleaner and rinse well. Pay close attention to the seam where fabric socks meet the shell, since sand and grit often collect there.
The waterproof zipper is one of the most important parts of the suit. After rinsing, inspect the teeth for sand, hair, salt, or debris. Use a soft toothbrush only if necessary, working gently along the zipper teeth. Do not force a zipper that feels rough or catches. Clean it first, let it dry, and apply zipper lubricant only if the suit manufacturer recommends a product for that zipper type.
Dry the Suit Completely Before Storage
Hang the drysuit in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Direct sun and high heat are hard on latex, adhesive, coatings, and waterproof zippers. Never place the suit on a radiator, near a space heater, or in a hot dryer unless the care instructions specifically allow low-heat tumble drying to reactivate the water-repellent finish.
Dry the outside first, then turn the suit inside out so the interior can dry fully. Trapped moisture creates odor and can encourage mildew, particularly in socks, pocket interiors, and zipper flaps. Give the suit time. A heavy three-layer shell with fabric socks may take a full day or longer to dry indoors.
Use a broad hanger that supports the shoulders without creating sharp creases. Do not hang a wet suit by its neck seal, wrist seals, or socks. The weight of wet fabric can stretch or distort those components.
Once dry, open the entry zipper and inspect the inside. If you smell mildew or notice dampness in a pocket or sock, allow more drying time before storage. Folding a suit while damp is one of the easiest ways to create a problem that could have been avoided.
Restore Water Repellency When Needed
A drysuit can remain waterproof while its outer face fabric begins to wet out. Wet-out happens when water no longer beads on the shell and instead darkens the fabric surface. The membrane may still be keeping water out, but breathability can feel reduced because moisture vapor has a harder time moving outward.
First, wash the suit. Dirt, sweat, and sunscreen can make a healthy water-repellent finish appear ineffective. If the shell is clean and still wets out quickly, use a DWR treatment made for waterproof-breathable outerwear. Follow the treatment and suit manufacturer instructions exactly. Some products are wash-in, while others are spray-on and better suited to targeting the outer face fabric.
Heat may be required to activate certain DWR treatments, but this is not universal. If your drysuit label permits low dryer heat, use that setting only. If it does not, do not improvise with high heat. The trade-off is clear: restoring repellency is useful, but protecting seals, seam tape, and waterproof components comes first.
How Often Should You Wash a Drysuit?
For freshwater paddlers, a thorough wash once or twice during the active season is often enough, plus a final cleaning before long-term storage. Rinse after every use when paddling saltwater, working around contaminated water, or exposing the suit to mud, fuel, heavy sunscreen, or sweat.
A rescue or occupational user may need to clean a suit more often because exposure is less predictable and contamination can be more serious. If the suit contacts sewage, chemicals, petroleum products, or unknown waterborne contaminants, follow your employer's decontamination protocol and the suit manufacturer's guidance. Normal home washing may not be sufficient.
Regular inspection should happen more often than full washing. Before each outing, check the seals for cracks, the socks for wear, the zipper for damage, and seam tape for lifting. Cleaning gives you a good chance to spot small issues before they become a cold-water failure.
A drysuit is protective equipment. Treat it that way: rinse it, clean it with the right products, dry it fully, and store it out of heat and sunlight. The few extra minutes after a trip help keep your suit comfortable, mobile, and ready when the water is least forgiving.
