Both suit types are built to keep water out. They manage body heat, movement, layering, and long-term comfort in very different ways.

For most active paddlers, a breathable drysuit is the more versatile option. For users who expect cold immersion, limited movement, or short periods in frigid water, neoprene can provide welcome built-in insulation. The right answer is not about which material is tougher. It is about matching the suit to the conditions, workload, and time you expect to spend exposed.

Breathable vs Neoprene Drysuit: The Core Difference

A breathable drysuit is a waterproof shell made from a membrane fabric. It blocks external water while allowing some water vapor from perspiration to move outward. It has little to no insulating value on its own, so you control warmth with drysuit liners or other non-cotton layers worn underneath.

A neoprene drysuit uses foam neoprene as its main material. Neoprene adds insulation because the material itself holds warmth, even when the air temperature drops. Depending on construction, it may be a true drysuit with waterproof entry and neck and wrist seals, or it may be a semi-dry design. That distinction matters. Do not assume every neoprene suit is fully dry simply because it is warm.

Both types should have reliable seals, a properly functioning entry zipper, and construction suited to the user’s activity. A drysuit only works as intended when the fit is correct and the closures are maintained.

When Neoprene Makes More Sense

Neoprene earns its place when insulation is the immediate priority. The material has inherent thermal protection, so it can feel warmer during low-activity exposure than a membrane shell with light layers underneath. It can also be reassuring for users who prefer a more substantial suit feel in cold conditions. If you are moving slowly, spending time on deck in wind, or working around water where a fall could mean prolonged exposure before recovery, neoprene’s insulation may be a meaningful advantage.

The trade-off is heat management. Neoprene is generally less effective at releasing perspiration, and it can feel hot or restrictive when you are paddling hard. You need enough room to sit, squat, reach overhead, and add your intended insulation layer without pulling hard across the shoulders, seat, or crotch. Care That Protects Your Investment

Rinse salt, mud, and sand from any drysuit after use. Dry it away from direct heat and sunlight, and store it according to the maker’s guidance rather than leaving it compressed in a gear bag. Keep zippers clean and lubricated with the correct zipper treatment. Do not force a zipper that has grit in the teeth.

Before cold-water trips, inspect wrist and neck seals for cracking, check seams and socks, and look for zipper damage.
